Question by : how are clocks of gps receiver are synchronized with the precise atomic clock of the GPS?
bcoz without it the gps receiver can never get the accurate travel time of the signal from the gps.

since the transmitted signal contain the transmitted time. So on receiving the signal at a particular time, it compute the travel time, hence the distance.

But for this to happen the receiver clock has to be synchronized with the atomic clock of the GPS.

How this is done is unclear to me.

Best answer:

Answer by Ritchie Valens
Perhaps the packets of information transmitted to the GPS receiver contain information about the distance from the satellite, it probably just conducts a simple t0 – t calculation to synchronize the time.

Is there an advantage, other than probably cost, to having the GPS satellites at 12,000 miles rather than in geostationary orbit? Would it work either way?

Best answer:

Answer by SiriusB
Geostationary can only apply to equatorial orbits. With GPS satellites it makes more sense to have them in a polar orbit so that they can cover the entire Earth’s surface over time. Also I presume that putting a satellite at the relatively large distance required for a stationary orbit (22,000 miles) would significantly reduce the precision with which the distance could be measured (GPS doesn’t use triangulation, it works by measuring the distance between satellite and receiver).

Question by ryuuou_miller: Should I get a dedicated GPS unit or stick with VZ Navigator?
I use VZ Navigator on my phone very often, and for the most part, it works for me. It’s $ 9.99 a month, though. I’m just wondering if getting a Garmin would be a better idea, or if it might be more trouble than it’s worth. I’ve heard a lot of bad reviews about a lot of GPS systems, not just Garmin’s. Could someone who has experience with both give me some feedback? Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Teddy Harlet
Consider the obvious fact, you can pay for a dedicated GPS unit in about 9 to 10 months if your wasting $ 9.99 per month on the verizons navigator. After 9 to 10 months, you basically pay yourself an additional $ 9.99 per month to maybe afford a extra dinner compliments of your intelligent decision to stop throwing money away.

I find the mobile or cell phone GPS a pain in the rear. Although it has some pro features, it has some cons too. To many for me to go into at this moment. I will just rest with the fact that I don’t like using it very much. The same goes for Garmin. My Garmin GPS is like my phone GPS, another useless paper weight that I don’t care to use.

Price is always the main factor when considering spending in this economy and shopping for a new piece of technology does not get any easier when considering a GPS. Why buy a GPS when you have one on your phone right? There is no doubt you need to get where you are going easily, quickly, and accurately without error, but you already have a GPS that you spend $ 9.99 for right. Don’t let $ 9.99 each month part you away from a great decision to switch to dedicated GPS.

Exploring can be fun, but buying the right GPS can be downright scary. Like you said you have read some pretty bad reviews about Garmin. Lets face it there are tons of bad reviews about Garmin GPS’s on the internet and there are tons of salesmen and saleswomen who are in here and on the internet fighting every day to answer questions like this to earn your purchase and confidence in the Garmin product. Just watch you will get about 3 to 4 hits recommending TomTom, Garmin, and Magellan. Most of these hits are from paid solicitors who sell on amazon and eBay. Can’t blame them for wanting to eat and affiliate programs pay at least 10% on each referral these days. So, in a struggling economy I can see why they do it.

The thing is they will recommend anything at your expense. You might as well keep throwing your money to Verizon, right? LOL!! Especially when you are on a budget. Buying a dedicated GPS does not have to scary considering you know what you are looking for and what you need. The first part about buying a GPS is to understand the many features and which you will need on your budget – this way you can get to using a better dedicated GPS fast.

You might be saying, what makes my opinion or answer any different. Well, I don’t generally buy from underdog company who are not well known. But, recently I did. And I was so impressed with their customer service, technical supports ability to answer any question and resolve it fast, and of course the most important a high quality GPS that kicks butt because it is so fast and light weight. I challenge anyone with a Garmin, Tomtom, or Magellan to try to use their GPS against the one I am recommending. The one I am recommending will come out on top every time. So, I’m just shocked that a no-body could make a good quality product. So, it got me to thinking are we being programmed to buy what the masses are buying just because of a reputation and are we getting quality goods from companies who have good reps or are they just giving us garbage. Any ways, I found it important to share my paradigm shift with any one willing to listen and that my friend is my payment. You will see that my answer will not have violating links, just my thoughts and opinions. If you like what I said then you can search for the product yourself.

One of the easier / fastest GPS’s to use is the Newelectronx gps. A personal GPS navigation device ensures you get to the destination quickly. Newelectronx gps design a slim 5 inch color GPS to be the world’s most user friendly interface with voice directions – has one of the best built in tutorial systems I have used. Don’t take my word for it.

Question by : What is the best handheld GPS for foreign city exploring?
Hello,

I’ll be traveling to Hamburg, Germany soon and I was hoping to purchase a handheld GPS unit to allow me to roam without having to worry about getting lost.

Obviously I would hope it’d be able to fit in my pocket. But I’d also need the unit to download a city map of Hamburg, be able to mark waypoint and have the ability to backtrack would be nice.

Suggestions from people that have used similar?

Best answer:

Answer by Brent
Tom Tom GPS Systems

You are trying to decide which new GPS system you should purchase and the choices are daunting. Here is a comparison of the TomTom Go 930T vs the Garmin Nuvi 765T to give you some assistance. Both are higher end units and both are made by reputable companies in the GPS navigation business. This is meant only as a comparison, not a competition since both are good GPS systems and each has features that will be relevant to different sectors.
Let’s start out with the features that both the TomTom Go 930T and the Garmin Nuvi 765T have in common. They both offer 4.3″ wide screen displays that are easily viewed in most lighting conditions. Both units offer Bluetooth to pair with compatible cell phones for hands free talking. These units both offer advanced lane guidance to show you which lane you need to be in to negotiate those complicated freeway interchanges. Text to voice is a feature that is offered by both units to tell you as well as show you which street you should be turning on. You can play your MP3s on both units through the SD card expansion and they both have pre-loaded Points of Interest (POIs) to more easily guide you to restaurants, hotels, gas stations, and other important places when you are in an unfamiliar location.
Both units offer real time traffic monitoring however it is free (ad supported) on the Garmin Nuvi 765T and is an additional paid service on the TomTom Go 930T. The TomTom unit offers both 2D and 3D maps to give you a more realistic perspective of your location. The TomTom has a customizable interface while the Garmin unit has a basic interface. The TomTom Go 930T offers I-Q routing which uses past traffic history to select the fastest, most efficient route. The Garmin Nuvi 765T uses Econo routing to save you precious fuel. The TomTom GPS system offers voice recognition programming of addresses while the Garmin does not.
Hopefully this comparison has helped you with your decision making. Whichever GPS system you decide to buy, happy travels.
This has been my project for the past few days.

I got a new marine VHF radio for the boat. It has connections to attach a GPS. With a GPS attached, it can display time, speed, heading, and lat/lon. And if you push the distress button to send a DSC distress signal, it’ll transmit your position in the distress call.

The only problem is that fixed mount GPS receivers are expensive. I could get a basic handheld GPS (like an eTrex), but I want something that’ll be simple and always connected and transmitting to the VHF.

Turns out you can get a cute little GPS receiver like this one for only . It speaks NMEA over RS-232. And it’s even waterproof. But it’s got a weird mini-din connector, and it needs 5 volts instead of the normal 12 volts that marine electronics gear runs on.

So I chopped off the original connector, and wired up a voltage regulator to turn 12 volts into 5 volts, and wired up a DB 9 connector. All that’s left is to cut a hole in the project box and seat the serial connector in it. When it’s done, it’ll be a box not much bigger than a cellphone that I can just strap to the top of the VHF.
